Melek completed her master’s in medicine and Epidemiology at the Erasmus University Rotterdam and Harvard School of Public Health. She finalized her PhD in 2011, which was on Embryonic Development in Virtual Reality. During her traineeship for becoming a Gynaecologist, she started working as a Postdoc at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, on innovative imaging of the first trimester of pregnancy, and on embryonic and fetal health. It is now 7 years ago she approached the Biomedical Imaging Group Rotterdam for help with automating the first trimester 2D and 3D ultrasound visualization of the fetus. Together they started a very productive research line on this topic. For this purpose, she works together with engineers, doctors, sonographist, policymakers and industry. Within the AI4AI project she is supervising Nikolai Herrmann, who is focusing on automating imaging markers for first trimester pregnancies using 3D ultrasound.
