Dr. ir. Wietske Bastiaansen is a postdoctoral researcher at Erasmus MC, Rotterdam, where she works at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence, ultrasonography, medical image analysis, and prenatal medicine. She is embedded within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the Biomedical Imaging Group Rotterdam (BIGR) of the department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine. Her research focuses on developing and translating AI-driven imaging methods to enable earlier, more reliable assessment of embryonic and fetal development. During her PhD, she developed the first spatiotemporal 4D atlas of the human embryonic brain, revealing voxel-level associations between early brain development and maternal health and lifestyle. Her subsequent postdoctoral research focuses on automated image analysis for first-trimester screening, including embryonic and placental imaging. Her work combines methodological innovation with clinical translation and interdisciplinary collaboration across engineering, obstetrics and gynaecology, epidemiology, and industry. She leads an emerging research line on AI for prenatal imaging, aiming to make first-trimester screening more efficient, reproducible, and comprehensive.
